The original PlayStation was a game-changer—literally. It introduced me (and so many others) to 3D gaming, immersive storytelling, and unforgettable experiences that left a lasting impression. Narrowing down my favorites to just five was tough, but these are the games that truly defined the PlayStation era for me. Of course, this is my list, so feel free to debate it in the comments!
1. Final Fantasy VII
How could I not include Final Fantasy VII? This was the first RPG that truly captured my imagination. The sprawling story, deep characters, and emotional moments (Aerith… 😢) were unforgettable. Combine that with its groundbreaking visuals (for the time) and Nobuo Uematsu’s legendary soundtrack, and you have a game that set the standard for all RPGs to come.
2. Metal Gear Solid
This wasn’t just a game—it was an experience. Metal Gear Solid was like playing through an action movie, complete with incredible stealth mechanics, an unforgettable cast of characters, and moments of pure genius (remember Psycho Mantis?). The mix of gameplay and cinematic storytelling blew my mind back then—and honestly, it still does.
3. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
I know Crash Bandicoot as a whole is iconic, but Warped is where it all came together for me. The levels were more creative, the gameplay was tighter, and the addition of vehicles and power-ups made it the perfect mix of platforming madness and pure fun. Crash wasn’t just a mascot—he was the mascot of the PlayStation era.
4. Resident Evil 2
If Resident Evil introduced survival horror to consoles, Resident Evil 2 perfected it. The dual campaigns with Leon and Claire, the eerie atmosphere of Raccoon City, and the sheer terror of Mr. X chasing you down hallways were pure adrenaline. I still remember the first time I heard the zombies groaning in the police station—it was chilling!
5. Spyro the Dragon
While Crash brought the chaos, Spyro the Dragon brought a more laid-back but equally captivating experience. Exploring beautifully crafted levels, collecting gems, and rescuing dragons was endlessly satisfying. Plus, Spyro had so much personality, and Stewart Copeland’s soundtrack added an extra layer of magic to the whole adventure.
Of course, there are so many more incredible PS1 games—Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Tomb Raider could easily make the cut depending on the day. But these five games are the ones that defined my time with the PlayStation.
