n64

The Nintendo 64 was home to some of the most iconic games of the late 90s and early 2000s, shaping my childhood in ways that are hard to describe. This list is highly subjective, just a glimpse into my personal favorites, but if you ask anyone who grew up with the console, I bet some of these will hit close to home. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 picks.

1. Super Mario 64

It’s impossible to talk about the N64 without mentioning Super Mario 64. It revolutionized 3D platformers and still holds up today. The open world of the castle, the freedom of movement, and those iconic Power Stars made every moment an adventure. Plus, who doesn’t remember the joy of flying through the sky in Wing Cap mode?

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time is the game that set the standard for action RPGs. From the deep story to the music that tugs at your heartstrings, it’s a game that feels timeless. I can still remember how magical it was to pull the Master Sword from its pedestal and feel like I was truly part of something legendary.

3. GoldenEye 007

A defining game of its time, GoldenEye wasn’t just a brilliant single-player experience but also a party favorite. The multiplayer mode is still one of my most memorable experiences on the N64—hours spent with friends, trying to outshoot each other in pixelated, blocky glory. It’s where I first discovered the joy of competitive local multiplayer.

4. Mario Kart 64

Nothing brings people together like Mario Kart 64. Sure, it’s chaotic, and yes, those blue shells are a nightmare, but that’s part of the fun. I’ve spent countless hours with friends, racing around the tracks, dodging items, and hoping to just get one win out of the mess. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s pure N64 magic.

5. Banjo-Kazooie

Instead of Donkey Kong 64, I have to go with Banjo-Kazooie here. This 3D platformer was one of the most charming and fun experiences on the system. With its quirky humor, memorable characters, and fantastic level design, Banjo-Kazooie was the perfect mix of platforming and exploration. From collecting jigsaw pieces to battling the evil witch Gruntilda, it’s a game I can easily pick up again and again.
